Inspired by early chaotic hardcore bands Unsane and Today is the Day, New Jersey's Deadguy began in 1994 among several housemates. After writing some songs and playing a number of shows, the band would enter the infamous Trax East Studios to record their first 7", 'White Meat,' for local record label Dada/Popgun Records. Playing a style of hardcore that was different from the sound of the time, Deadguy began to gain notoriety as it toured around the Northeast area. The next release for the band would be the 'Work Ethic' 7"/CDEP on Engine/Blackout Records. Following the release, the band jumped to Chicago's Victory Records, where their debut full-length, 'Fixation on a Co-Worker,' was published in 1995. Deadguy would then embark on its first tour, which turned out to be an unpleasant experience. Eventually, inner turmoil would cause two of the band's members to leave for Seattle and form Kiss It Goodbye. Meanwhile, the remaining 3/5's of Deadguy shifted some of the band's duties among its members, and recruited others to fill in the remaining gaps. From there, the group would release its second full-length, 'Screamin' with the Deadguy Quintet,' recorded by none other than Today is the Day's Steve Austin (no, not the wrestler). After numerous tours and unique stories, the band played its last show back in their home state of New Jersey in May of 1997. The final testament of Deadguy's genius would be a live album of a July 1996 show at New York's legendary CBGBs entitled, 'I Know Your Tragedy'
